Economic impact unclear if U.S. eventually grants China market economy status

The economic effect of China being treated as a market economy by the Commerce Department in antidumping cases is unclear as trade law practitioners are divided on the ramifications of such a change in status. Commerce currently treats China as a non-market economy, which is allowed under a provision of China's World Trade Organization Accession protocol.
