Okonjo-Iweala: WTO must reform transparency rules that lack bite

The World Trade Organization must update its transparency rules because they are not as “biting” as initially intended, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said on Monday. The U.S. has long complained about members not living up to transparency commitments and failing to file notifications in a timely manner, a stance that culminated in the Trump administration’s 2017 proposal that the WTO impose punitive measures on members that are lax in their notifications.
